About the event
GUEST SPEAKER: DR JOHN NEWTON
(Principal of Scotch College)
Who really won Waterloo?
There should be no question as to who won at Waterloo in 1815. After the battle, Arthur Wellesley became the Duke of Wellington and got a big house in Oxfordshire. Napoleon got a one-way ticket to an island in the South Atlantic and was killed – they say – by his wallpaper.
It is two hundred years since the death of the leader of La Grande Armée who dominated Europe at the start of the 19th century. As we look back is it really the case that he was utterly defeated? Or could the former French Emperor contemplate with satisfaction some small victory on his bare, windy rock just 1200 kilometres west of Africa and 6000 kilometres north east of the Falklands?
Maybe there is more to history - and life - than winning battles…
