The rescue of the Danish Jews in 1943

Guest Speaker: Associate Judge Elizabeth Olsson

In October 1943, almost 95% of Denmark’s Jewish population were evacuated to safety in neutral Sweden. Through a spontaneously organized, nationwide effort by the Danish resistance and ordinary citizens, approximately 7,200 Jews and nearly 700 non-Jewish spouses were successfully smuggled across the Øresund strait in small fishing boats. This is the story of the heroism of the Danes and of what happened to the 464 people left behind.
