Sunday Roast Lunch: The Big Spit

You may be surprised to learn that although the Sporting Guns shoot clay pigeons, we don’t as a rule, eat them. But we are keen to present the broader membership with the fruits of our labour. The pursuit of real quarry for the table is not always reliable and some might baulk at the prospect of ‘shot game’.

Thanks to one of our number, the gregarious and generous George Kontopolous, proprietor of Omega Foods at Hindmarsh, we have struck the perfect compromise.

Come along to our September Roast with a difference. By the time you arrive, our main course will have been rotating over hot coals in the garden for hours, closely tended by ‘The Guns’. Spit roast cooking is one of the oldest forms of food preparation known to humanity, dating back millennia. With ‘dirty cooking’ (cooking directly in the coals) making something of a comeback in some circles, you may be pleased to hear that there is a higher level of sophistication and a degree of separation involved here, between the coals and the object of our culinary desire!
