RAAF Anniversary Formal Club Dinner

Eighty years ago, on 23rd March 1944, the decision was made that up to 200 Air Force Officers would escape, the following evening, from Stalag Luft 111, near Sagan in East Prussia, through a tunnel named Harry.

Subsequently described as ‘The Great Escape’ there were 76 escapees and of these 3 returned to England. The remainder were recaptured; of these 50, including 5 Australians, were murdered.

GPCAPT Christopher J Verco RFD KSJ ret will speak of the murder conspiracy, the murders, the misinformation provided to the protecting power [Switzerland], the criminal investigation, the prosecutions, and the punishment of the murderers.
