About the event
Every year, the Club commemorates the historic meeting between Commander Matthew Flinders and Capitaine de Vaisseau Nicolas Baudin in Encounter Bay on 8 April 1802.
The Club is proud to display a copy of Baudin’s journal of his voyage and encounter with Flinders, kindly on loan from HMAS Encounter.
Captain David Holbourn (Retd) AFC FRAeS, an amateur historian with a strong interest in Australian maritime history - and Matthew Flinders in particular - is the proud owner of a first-edition copy of Volume II of Flinders’ A Voyage to Terra Australis, published in two volumes plus charts.
CAPT Holbourn has generously donated a facsimile of Volume I, along with a display case, to be placed in the Ward Room alongside Baudin’s journal. He will present the book to the Club and speak briefly about both the work and his enduring interest in Matthew Flinders.
