About the event

B3/58 Lieutenant Vaughan Murray Griffin was the official war artist, attached to the Headquarters of the 8th Division, during the Malaya Singapore campaign, and as a POW 1942-5. In 1946-47 the Australian War Memorial toured to all State Capital City Galleries:

“Exhibition of paintings & drawings by Murray Griffin, Official War Artist while a prisoner of war in the Changi area, Singapore, 1942–45,”

In Adelaide in January 1947, in just a fortnight, 17,000 people came to see this exhibition. Some 3,000 people turned up on a single day. And the catalogue had to be reprinted many times. Through this illustrated talk, Joan Butler will invite us to put ourselves in the shoes of those many Australians who, just after the war, were able to visit this confronting national exhibition, described at the time as 'a powerful and convincing record of war'.
