In 9 AD the 72-year-old Roman Emperor, Augustus, could be seen wandering the corridors of his palace on the Aventine Hill in Rome muttering and even crying out in distress, “Quinctili Vari Legiones Redde!” while at times also butting his head against the wall.

What had caused this normally reserved man to act in such an undignified way; indeed, these were actions that he would continue sporadically over the last five years of his life?
