This year marks 70 years of Adelaide Airport connecting South Australians to the world, a milestone that celebrates a history of growth, ambition, and transformation. The story of aviation in Adelaide began long before the airport’s official opening in 1955. In 1919, three young South Australians (and one Victorian), including pilot brothers Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith, made history by completing the first-ever flight from England to Australia in a Vickers Vimy aircraft. Their remarkable journey landed them in aviation’s hall of fame, and the aircraft they flew (the G-EAOU) now proudly sits at Adelaide Airport in a specially built exhibition space. The Vickers Vimy exhibition honours not only a world-first achievement but also South Australia’s pioneering role in global aviation. The airport as we know it today was officially opened on 16…
