About the event
Despite advice, from his three Service Chief’s, that Malta could not be defended in the face of the threat from Italy, in June 1940, Winston Churchill stubbornly insisted that the Island must be held at all costs. Consequently, Malta endured a siege that lasted from 10 June 1940 until January 1943.
This presentation will examine the reasons behind the decision to retain control of Malta and its role in the British war effort in the Mediterranean and North Africa.
It will discuss the privations the Maltese population and the British garrison suffered during two and half years of siege.
Finally, it will look at the costs that it took, in lives and material, to keep the island in British hands.
