About the event
Legions of Australian Army recruits have sat through the 1964 epic movie, ‘Zulu’. The story of the Battle of Rorke’s Drift in 1879, eleven VCs awarded, the unlikely triumph of a small band of men against seemingly insurmountable odds; courage leadership, duty and stoicism.
In reality, it was sideshow, the ‘flipside’ of a much bigger battle that was an absolute catastrophe for the British Army, coinciding with a solar eclipse and all of the ‘light and shade’ symbology that evokes.
This movie was released in 1979, near the 100thanniversary of the Battle of Isandlwhana. The consequence of Colonial intrigue, an illegal unauthorised invasion of Zulu lands, which produced no upside apart from the fact it was never sanctioned by London. Not Britain’s finest hour.
A cracking cast including Peter O’Toole, Burt Lancaster, Sir John Miles, Bob Hoskins and Simon Ward, and a host of other ‘familiar faces’ of British drama, together with a Zulu army deliver an excellent rendition of the story of a dark day indeed for Britain.
