About the event
Following his insightful presentation in October 2020 of the Fall of France in 1940, known in French history as La Debacle, Dr Romain Fathi returns to explore and inform us on the aftermath of invasion and occupation; La Résistance. In a time of great turmoil and anguish for France, opposing the Nazi occupiers was a pursuit fraught with life and death risks. Some aspects of the Occupation have left deep controversy in their wake. Dr Fathi will examine the formation of the various Résistance movements both in metropolitan France and overseas, their aims and actions, which were not always complimentary. The role of key figures such as de Gaulle and lesser-known identities of the Résistance will be examined in the context of the political and operational challenges they faced as well as opportunities. Today the figure of the Résistant occupies a prime position in the national narrative – this presentation will look behind the popular image.
