‘The Death, Burial, and Reburial of Matthew Flinders’.
With Guest Speaker: Dr Gillian Dooley
This long-established Club event celebrates the 224th anniversary of the historic encounter between Commander Matthew Flinders and Capitaine de Vaisseau Nicolas Baudin on 8 April 1802.
Gillian Dooley is an Honorary Associate Professor in English Literature at Flinders University. Her research interests range across literature, music, and history, including the life and work of Jane Austen, Iris Murdoch, V.S. Naipaul, J.M Coetzee, and Matthew Flinders. Recent books include Matthew Flinders: The Man Behind the Map (2022) and She Played and Sang: Jane Austen and Music (2024). She has published journal articles, book chapters, and edited books, including letters and other primary sources and collections of essays. Currently, among other projects, she is working on a book centred on Matthew Flinders’ sister-in-law Isabella Tyler, who wrote a short memoir of Flinders in 1852.
