About the event
This long-established Club event celebrates the 221st anniversary of the historic encounter between Commander Matthew Flinders and Capitaine de Vaisseau Nicolas Baudin on 8 April 1802. Our guest speaker for this event will be Dr Romain Fathi. This talk aims to retrace the Australian-French relationship by considering three false starts: 1802, 1918 and 2021. A century apart, these key moments in French-Australian history reveal so much of the difficult nature of the relationship between the two Pacific neighbours. Going beyond the mere veneer of diplomatic chats of friendship and companionship, this presentation investigates why - to this day - the history of the French-Australian relationship has resulted in more disappointments than successes. The aim is to identify avenues as to how this relationship could be strengthened. Join us at the Club for a premium three-course dinner with Club beverages.
