The talk will explore the inconvenient and little-discussed challenges involved in the delivery of the requisite materials for the transition to a net-zero economy.  It will document the impacts of the mining and processing of these materials, their construction into renewable energy infrastructure, and their whole-of-life environmental and financial costs. These impacts will be related to the corresponding environmental, reliability and financial costs of nuclear energy options for energy delivery.

Guest Speaker Biography

Dr Rod Hill is a retired Chief Research Scientist and Group Executive for Exploration, Mining, Mineral Processing, Energy Technology, Industrial Physics and Manufacturing at the CSIRO and a former Pro Vice Chancellor for Industry Engagement and Commercialisation at Monash University. He has PhD and DSc degrees from the University of Adelaide, South Australia in crystallography, crystal chemistry and…
