Topic: The Unique and Amazing Story of the Ursus Soldier of World War II (Paws at Monte Cassino)
Guest Speaker: Dr Beata Byok MB,BS, GDOH, FAFOEM (RACP), MAICD
There were many stories of heroism during World War II but this story is both fascinating and unique, and truly amazing, yet also provides insights into conditions endured by allied soldiers and extends beyond the confines of war, touching on the post war experience of some of those soldiers, especially our story’s hero. While they fought in many battles the story will particularly mention the campaign to win the Italian monastery of Monte Cassino, on the route to Rome. This epic battle is considered one of the most major and intense of WW II. Using eyewitness accounts the role of our hero is brought to life and will, I am sure, amaze those listening, just as it amazed me when researching this presentation. It is also a story of comradeship, of loyalty, of the bonds forged through war amongst disparate individuals and of a reputation that lasts right up to the present day with multiple memorials commemorating our hero and the respect and love they earned during terrible times. This is a true and truly wonderful story.
